Poor Siri audio after iOS update

I’ve noticed a dramatic dip in audio quality anytime I have Siri read speech selection or read the screen. The audio quality is fine when using Siri/Hey Siri itself, as well as with anything else that requires audio (edited to add: so it actually does happen when using Siri/Hey Siri, but at random). It sounds as if Siri is underwater, or muffled.

I originally thought it was my AirPods, but this is something I can hear whether it’s coming through my AirPods Pro, wired EarPods, or the iPhone itself. It’s even observable through screen recording, which you can watch/listen to here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/j7vwfndpdi2256z/SiriSpeak.mov?dl=0)

I believe it started after the iOS 15 update. Is this a known issue? Thanks!

Hi there brkemc,

We understand you're experiencing an issue with the audio quality of Siri when reading the screen after iOS 15, and we'd like to see if we can assist.

Do you experience the same issue with other audio, such as phone calls or playing music and videos?

If you have a case or screen protector on the device, does the issue persist with it removed?

Also, if you haven't already, restart your iPhone and check for the issue again.

Thanks!

Wow, I'm surprised so many other people are experiencing this same issue.

I actually upgraded to the 13 Pro Max (I think I left this out in the original post, but I was using the 11 Pro Max), and have since not experienced the issue. Since my husband had been using a XR, he went ahead and popped his SIM card into my 11 Pro Max and factor reset the phone. He has not been experiencing the issue at all since taking over the phone, and its been about five weeks.

But clearly this is still a fairly common issue. Hoping Apple addresses it soon.

Super glad to have stumbled onto this discussion. Bought some AirPod pro’s for Christmas and thinking maybe there was a defect but then after reading through this discussion decided to try Siri while not using the headphones and sure enough, still very poor quality. The timing of me discovering this was off, I guess I hadn’t super paid attention until now. And then the upgrade to 15.2 hasn’t worked either like people mentioned. Hope this is in the works to be patched, pretty annoying I rely on Siri a lot to read messages when I’m not able to look at my phone.
