I'm trying to copy a file from my hard drive to a SD card plugged into the laptop via a usb-c card reader.
When I drag the file over in Finder, the window pops up and just spins on "estimating time remaining".
I can copy the file over without issues using the 'cp' command.
Why is the macos so broken like this? How is Apple so bad at basic functionality?

Start with New User:
For temporary use, create a new administrator, seeing if you still get this error. If not, it is likely a misconfiguration in the current user. If so, then it is either a hardware issue, or an use with the macOS.

One might reverify if the computer is up-to-date. As per user profile - indicate running Big Sur 11.5. Current version is Big Sur 11.6.1 which brings addition bug fixes and security fixes too.
The above may or may not be related to the original issue under discussion.
Further, as the sis the apple Silicon M 1 ** - it does qualify for the Oct 25, 2021 upgrade to Monterey version 12.0.1
