MacBook photos & iCloud

How can I delete photos from my MacBook to save space while keeping the ones I have on iCloud? I have read you cannot delete photos on MacBook without them being deleted on iCloud. I want to update my MacBook, and the best way to gain space is deleting my photos from my MacBook. So, I want to know, if there is a way, to delete my photos off the Photos app but retain them on iCloud?

No. Your photos are synced so changes made in either location are reflected in the other. You can optimize photos on your Mac to save space. Open photos > preferences > iCloud and select optimize
