Read receipts even though it is turned off

Hey all, this question has been asked before. but read receipts are still showing even though:

they are turned off in settings
they are turned off for individual people
I updated my iPhone to iOS 15 yesterday, and
I restarted it.

What else could be wrong? I have an iPhone11. This doesn't happen for all of my contacts but it seems to get more. Just yesterday I noticed that it turned on for a different conversation that wasn't showing read receipts before.

Hello Juliane52,

It appears you are having an issue with read receipts in Messages.

Please confirm that Settings > Messages, Send Read Receipts is toggled off. If it is does show that it is off, let's check each contact you're experiencing this issue with directly from the message thread and check if Send Read Receipts is disabled.

Also, go ahead and restart the iPhone using these instructions: Restart your iPhone. While simple, this can refresh the iOS, apps and connections.

If you continue to see them, even though everything is set correctly, we would recommend Contact - Official Apple Support.
