MacBook Pro 13 inch mid-2012 A1278 - SSD replacement partitioning issue - 512GB limit ??

I replaced the HDD for a 1TB SSD in my mid-2012 MacBook Pro. However, when installing Catalina

the operating system will only partition in 512GB segments. I used APFS.

I would like to use the entire 1TB as a single partition - is there something I am missing here or is the 512GB a limitation of the laptop?

I am able to partition the other 512GB, but separately.

What is the make & model of the SSD?

Use Disk Utility to select the whole physical drive and erase it as GUID partition and APFS (top option). You will need to click "View" within Disk Utility and select "Show All Devices" so that the physical drive appears on the left pane of Disk Utility. The physical drive is usually identified by its Make & Model.

It is also possible the hard drive SATA Cable is bad which is very common with the 13" model.
