I suggest you start with the most frequent and easiest potential problem, make sure your AirPods are completely clean. How to clean your AirPods, AirPods Pro, AirPods Max, and EarPods - Apple Support

I found that I got better sound performance if I reversed the left & right AirPods in my ears. But then the problem was I didn't get a good fit and they kept falling out. I eventually gave them to my daughter and got a set of AirPod Pros.
