Hi, I changed phone companies but kept the same number. Now whenever I go onto my old phone and try to erase everything on it to restart it, it wont let me sign out. It says “Verification Failed : There was an error connecting to the Apple ID server” How do I sign out?

Verification Failed "problem connecting to the server" March 2018 - https://discussions.apple.com/thread/8321958 - Needed to connect over wi-fi and not through cellular.
