private relay not compatible with wifi network

I got a notice that my wifi home network is not compatible with Private Relay. What steps are available to correct this issue?

@barney-15e thanks for contributing unlike some of the other posters. What I discovered is if you don't have Private Relay on, your images won't load in mail if you have Protect Mail Activity on. Both of these are positives. I really can't say what I did on my router other than turn off UPnP and turn MiMO on but it now seems to be working that my network isn't reporting that its incompatible with private relay and my mail is loading all the images with both both private relay and mail protection on.

Please do me a favor and remove the reference above to the toaster. This board should be positive for users. Thanks.

Yes I understand Apple supports apple but when they roll out something like Private Relay their reference to computer science level tech doesn't help people that aren't that sophisticated with routers.

The "tech" doesn't require you to alter a standard router configuration. If there is a problem with your router, it would be caused by you altering the default, out-of-the-box configuration, so you would seemingly know how to configure your router. You could try following the instructions to reset your router to factory, then configure the minimal changes needed (like name and password).

However, none of us here can tell you how to configure your router as we probably don't own the same one you have.

Is Private Relay enabled in the Network System Preferences for your Network Service? Is there any message next to the checkbox that might explain why it is grayed out or when you try to enable it.

One possible configuration is you are running traffic through some type of VPN or proxy. Again, something you would have had to set up on your own so you know how to do it. I suppose you could have installed Adware that changed your network settings.

I am not blaming Apple. I am suggesting. This is feedback - no good or bad or right or wrong.

For the millions of people that don't understand the complexities of networking some basic responses would be useful.

What are the most common reasons private relay doesn't work on home network? How to fix them. Are they as simple as whitelisting

mask.icloud.com
mask-h2.icloud.com

Is it more complicated that that? Stop making judgements and start helping people here.

I don’t know what does that with Mail. Some people see what you are experiencing. You can disable hiding your IP and you won’t be any worse off than you were before Monterey.

The same things that would block Safari might also block Mail.

Both could also be some blocking done by your Internet Service Provider. The only blocking ice ever heard of is to prevent you running a server over their residential service. I don’t see how that would affect the hiding service.

My guess would be MIMO, but UPnP could also be the cause. I don't know how secure UPnP is these days, but it was a security risk quite a long time ago. I've never needed it, so have never kept up with it's status.

MIMO might provide you with better connection and speed on your Wi-Fi network, so it might be worthwhile re-enabling to see if it is the cause. I don't have a MIMO-capable router.
