If I try to upgrade my Mackbook and it isn't compatible, will it tell me?

I have a rebuilt Macbook Air, thought I was buying a Pro. Need to upgrade the OS from High Sierra. If I try to upgrade and it isn't compatible, will it tell me? I don't want to destroy my current OS.
