Google Maps Street View crashes in Safari

Google Maps always worked well in Safari on my MacBook, but since a couple of weeks, as soon as I try the street view functionality (the orange little man) it crashes, reloads, crashes again, etc. It just says "a problem occurred" without further explanation. How to solve this? (MacOS Catalina 10.15.7)

MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 10.15

Good day.

My father had the same issue with his older Macbook and asked me to look into it.

A reinstall of macOS temporarily fixed his problem, until automatic updates brought the issue back.

Reinstalling Safari (the installer package for Catalina) did not fix anything.

In the end, the fix comes down to the following:

In the Safari Menu Bar, go to Develop >> Experimental Features >> then check both WebGL 2.0 and WebGL via Metal.

If Develop is not in the Safari Menu bar, go to Safari >> Preferences >> Advanced >> and tick "Show Develop menu in menu bar" down the bottom.

I hope this helps out most of the folks in this thread. Have a nice day!

I have been having a similar issue with a financial services website. I could make it work on an iPad but on my older MacBook Pro the site repeatedly failed to load. Took the advice of one responder to tick WebGL via Metal under Develop - and it now works fine.

Pity that Apple has not apparently exerted itself to address this frustrating issue.

This is also a problem for me. It's been going on since I installed Safari 15.1 (Catalina). It does not affect the last version of Safari Tech Preview for Catalina (Release 125). It also intermittently affects Google Chrome 95, but only when Hardware Acceleration is turned on. So it may very well be a WebKit problem. I reported it as a bug already, but it remains to be seen if it will be fixed.

Safari 15.1 - A problem repeatedly occurred with...

Since the last update to 10.15.7 (Catalina OS) and Safari 15.1 I have a problem with the opening of some pages with an error "A problem repeatedly occurred with...". Switching on/off the enable JavaScript flag doesn't help. How is it possible to reinstall Safari to a previous version? (The latter is not the preferred solution!)

Apple, the answer please...

I’m glad to help!

I’d like to add that, although hidden behind ‘Experimental features’, they’re not at all as ‘experimental’ as Safari makes it seem. Both of the options were checked (as system default) on my 16” Macbook Pro running Monterey.

The ‘experimental features’ gives the false impression that the features might be insecure, unstable or otherwise. Since they’re actually system defaults, you shouldn’t need to worry about it.
