Final Cut Pro X not working

FCPX keeps stalling, failing to respond. I have tried restarting with option command and deleting preferenxes. That makes no difference at all. I am finding it almost impossible to edit because it keeps going into "non-response" mode with the beach ball. Would it help to move the FCPX application to trash ... delete it ... then download and reinstall a fresh FCPX application?

iMac Pro, macOS 10.13
