GMail app notifications stopped working

I don't know if this is an Apple problem or a Gmail problem. I'm running IOS 14.8.1 on an iPhone XS. All of a sudden incoming email no longer makes a notification or increases the un-read number on the Gmail icon. Email is being received and the message count is updated AFTER going to the app. I thought it might have something to do with Google turning on two-step authentication, but turning that off didn't help. I've checked all of what I think are relevant settings (especially regarding notifications) and they seem to be set properly; in any case, I didn't change any of them. I've tried rebooting the iPhone but that didn't help.

Thanks for responding, but it seems you didn't notice I was talking about the Gmail app, not the Apple mail app. In any case, I found a discussion where other people were having a similar problem and solved it simply by deleting and reloading the Gmail app, although it wasn't made clearly exactly what goes wrong. That worked for me. There was a fairly long discussion somewhere about the fact that Apple doesn't allow push notifications, so the issue wouldn't have arisen with the Apple mail app anyway, but Gmail in effect simulates them.

Hello Theodore Lee,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities. Based on your post, your incoming emails aren't showing up on the badge icon or notifying you when they should be. We'll do our best to assist with this.

You mentioned checking the Mail notification settings and any related settings. Did you check for the fetch settings by chance? If not, try steps under section 'Check Mail Fetch and Notification settings' here: If you can't receive email on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

In case that doesn't help, if you're using a VPN or security software, we'd recommend to disable them and restart the device. As these may be blocking the connection: Check VPN (Virtual Private Network) and third-party software to help resolve network connectivity issues

Should it persist, does this always happen or only when connected to a specific Wi-Fi network? Do you have other email accounts added to your iPhone? If so, does this happen with those accounts, as well?

Hoping to hear back, take care.
