What is this thing on my screen and how do I get rid of it?

See the picture. I use the ipad folio hardware keyboard. This “tool” pops up in some messaging programs and it covers up the “enter” or “send” icon. It is a new feature of the latest iOS upgrade and I had never seen it in prior versions. I need to turn it OFF. Any ideas how?

The icon at bottom right of the screen allows you to easily expose the on-screen keyboard for input of special characters that cannot be accessed from the physical keyboard (e.g. emoji).

The icons can be disabled from iPad settings:

Settings > General > Keyboard > [All Keyboards] Shortcuts - set to OFF
