I cannot get mail on my ipad and I get the message - the mail sever "imap.gmail.com" is not responding. Verify that you have entered the correct account info in Mail settings. I don't know how to find Mail settings.

Mail Settings? Are you using the native Apple Mail App - or something else?
For the iPad Mail App, Mail account settings can be accessed from iPad settings:
Settings > Mail > Accounts > [Your email account - Gmail?] > [Mail Account]
