HomePod quality drastically decreased

I fired up my HomePod today and suddenly the audio quality was drastically worse. It used to fill the room but now sounds like it's coming from a tinny old laptop speaker. I tried streaming music directly from my iPhone, also from Apple Music, tried controlling via phone and MacBook and by asking Siri, all the same thing. Any idea what could've happened?
