Is there a possible way to make an exchange? Do I have to return first and repurchase the item??

If you go to an Apple store within 14 days of purchase you can return the phone and get a different phone in the same transaction. Otherwise you need to return for credit, then purchase the new phone. Note that to return it must be in the original packaging with all accessories.
