Various iPhone SE2 iOS 15.1 crashes

Hi,

since updating to iOS 15 and 15.1 I have various crashes on my iPhone SE2:

  • Apps crash more and more often.
  • The phone locks itself after showing the white spinning circle.
  • The iPhone spontaneously shuts down or reboots.

The good news: a DFU restore fixes that

The bad news I have to do a DFU restore every 4-5 days before things get borderline unusable.

So I did contact apple support who did remote scans saying that the hardware is fine.

Also they have not heard of such crashes before. Only that not yet updated 3rd party apps may not function as expected until the required security features have been implemented (?)

Interestingly one of the most affected apps is Apple Camera.

Asking for options I have been told that iOS 15 is still pretty new and that faults are to be expected. The best thing to do is keep restoring my phone until an update maybe fixes my stability issues.

What's also interesting is, that so far the first restore attempt fails, but a second DFU Restore seems to work.

Does anyone experience similar symptoms or has some advice?

After things got even worse I took the AASP’s advise to restore my iPhone WITHOUT restoring my backup.

That indeed made things better for about 2 weeks, but then I was back to 2-3 spontaneous iPhone reboots a day and countless app crashes.

That’s when I bit the bullet and got myself a replacement. Also an iPhone SE2.

Interestingly even though Apple phone support insisted and the AASP suggested that the phone would be ok, all my troubles went away on on the new hardware.

I did now send the original phone to Apple for inspection and maybe replacement. I have to admit that my experience left me a bit disappointed by Apple support and the AASP.

Maybe the Apple repair center can confirm that something is a tad suboptimal with my phone.

So it took the Apple repair center 2 hours to figure out that my original phone is broken and decide to send me a replacement.

Which is a pleasant surprise.

My takeaway are:

a. always have an adequate spare phone

b. don’t bother leaving your phone for days at an Apple Authorized Service Provider risking additional costs. Send items directly to Apple for inspection / repair.

I wonder if anyone has had similar experiences or another take on this?

Good afternoon rao,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!

It sounds like you are having issues with your iPhone SE (2nd generation) iOS and apps becoming unresponsive, and we'd like to help.

We would suggest you reach back out to Apple and have an Apple Retail Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider near you inspect your iPhone.

Contact Apple for support and service

Take care.

Hi,

thanks for your advice.

Interestingly when contacting Apple support again, they immediately pointed me towards an Apple Authorized Service Provider.

Not sure what changed since last time they "never heard about such problems before." But I suspect calling twice about the same problem might be part.

Also now apps start to freeze forcing me to regularly restart my iPhone.

So I went to an Apple Authorized Service Provider who told me, that they need to keep my phone for some days.

Should they find that there are no problems after a restore they would have to charge me 50 Euros extra though.

Thing is, there is no option to get a temporary replacement, so I will have to look for some way to get an extra iPhone first.

Also my iPhone usually behaves quite ok for some days after a restore. Which males me doubt a little if the AASP would see any errors.

Not having restored my iPhone for some days I now get a spontaneous reboot or shutdown at least every other day.

Of course there are still lots of app crashes but somehow I manage to ignore those.

So I hope to last until iOS 15.2 to see if that changes things for the better.

If not I will either get another iPhone and have mine looked at or maybe go for a trade-in.
