Unauthorized modification

Hello, I am very disappointed with your company's policy. I am from Russia and my warranty service was withdrawn due to unauthorized modification. And I just updated iOS via settings. Now Apple wants me to pay them for repairs. I bought an iPhone 4 months ago. Nobody wants to figure it out. Is this normal?

iPhone 12, iOS 14

That is expected behavior, per the Terms & Conditions of Apple's Limited Warranty.

Unauthorized modifications done to the affected product void out the warranty status, and then moving foward you are only eligible for service with OOW pricing. Updating the iOS within Settings would never be considered unauthorized modification nor is that the reason why.

Unauthorized modifications include but are not limited to:

  • jailbreaking
  • Serial number modification/tampering

Whether you did or did not personally, at some point and time, some form of jailbreaking had to occur, and as such was confirmed by Apple when the device was undergoing diagnostic testing and/or inspection prior to completing service. There is nothing that can be done in terms of having the Limited Warranty applied back to the device.

Unauthorized modification can also refer to hardware modifications, generally in the form of repairs by unauthorized people. The article you linked to refers only to unauthorized modification of the operating system.

Am I the only person in the world who has had this happen? When you didn't do anything, but Apple sees a system hack? Hence the question, if I caught some kind of virus? Or would you say that there are no viruses on iOS?

No, there are no known viruses that affect iPhones (unless you've already jailbroken them). Again, in your case, "unauthorized modifications" probably has nothing to do with jailbreaking. I suggest you contact Apple Support and find out exactly what the modification in question was.
