Emojis not showing up on touch bar

Hello everyone,

ever since I updated my M1 MacBook Pro to macOS Monterey, the emojis stopped showing up after pressing the emoji icon on my Touch Bar. The touch bar goes black when I do so, and there is still an exit button where it's supposed to be, but even when I click on it it's not responding; basically the Touch Bar freezes when I try to use the emoji option. Other than that the Touch Bar is fine though. The Touch Bar is actually the main reason why I got a MBP over a MBA so that matter really disappoints me. Does anybody have any ideas on how to fix that issue?

They ARE there, but when I press the emoji, then I just get a black touch bar with a non-responsive closing x

I have exactly he same issue here! On my MacBook Pro M1.

Apple, please give us some actual human replies on this, or at least listen and try to work on the problem for us in your next software update????!!!

I genuinely feel like Apple's approach - to both its products and its customers - has gone downhill a lot since Steve Jobs passed away. The vision, excitement and human connection has been lost, leaving just the commercialism and profit margins.

(I would insert an 'eyes up to the heavens' emoji here. But I can't, because the Touch Bar won't let me. (angry face))

Guys I have the same problem but I might have just found a solution. I was in the UK for 2 weeks and it worked all the time I was there, once I got back to my home country, it stopped working again after few hours. I changed my Region to UK a it WORKS again. Not sure if this is permanent FIX but worth trying.

Btw total ignore from Apple, they ditched touch bar so they don't care about it anymore. There were 2 updates of Monterey and none of them fixed this issue!!! Really frustrating

wow i'm having the exact same problem here!

usually a restart will fix it, but i still notice that it right after restarting it still shows only the X the first time tapping on the emoji button, only a second time after exiting will display all of them. (even in Safe Boot)

I also often notice that it will stop displaying altogether nor being able to tap the X to exit when the Mac has been running long hours. It's just stuck on the X unless I click on somewhere else I can type, even then it happens.

Also started happening when I've updated to Monterey.

Hello oliwia146,

Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities. Upon review of your post, it seems that you are unable to access the Touch Bar emoji section. We can see why you’d want this taken care of, so let us help from here! Let’s start by reviewing the following article which may help: Use the Touch Bar on MacBook Pro. If the proper steps are being followed to use the emojis, please continue by testing to see when this behavior occurs.

First, put your Mac into safe mode and test. Booting into safe mode will disable any startup and login items from automatically opening, which can help us to isolate the source of the issue further. When you do this, you’ll see some unusual behavior from the display; this is to be expected. Please follow the steps in this article: How to use safe mode on your Mac.

Next, let's see if this behavior persists in a second user account on your Mac. If you have a second account, please log into that and see how it works. If you don't have one you can use, please follow these steps to make a test account that can be deleted later: Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac.

Please let us know if you have follow up questions, so we can continue assisting. Take care!

I just wanted to add that I have been experiencing the same issue in the hopes that Apple will address this in a further update! I had been on Big Sur since I got my MacBook and never experienced an issue like this. It only began once I upgraded to Monterey. Additionally, a similar thing occurs when working with CLion, and the application no longer responds to the debugging buttons that are normally available on the touchbar.

I noticed that there was a new OS update today. Does anyone know if this issue was fixed? It started happening to me in late January, and aside from completely erasing and starting over, I can't think of anything else that might fix it.

It's very annoying and frustrating.

These ar good news! I must say that I had this problem with my 13'' MacBook with M1, which I just sent it back and traded since I had too many problems with it. But with my 15'' I am not having the same problem, nor with the Emojis, crashing, or the like.
