How do I reactivate spell check and grammar (specifically Norsk Bokmål)?

Apple Mail 10.3: Preference for Spell Check says "Never" BUT IT STILL TRIES TO CORRECT SPELLING, HELP!!! Can anyone help me disable Spell check (Apple Mail 10.3)? "Never" is selected in the Preferences for Spell Check, and yet the feature continuously corrects and is a total nuisance. Spelling in Mail, OS Monterey v 12.1 How can I stop Spelling? I spell better than it does, and know more. But once I happened to touch on it, it seems I'm stuck with it. Hiding it doesn't help -- it pops up, unbidden. This is not vital. But like many elements of the Apple system, it really is irritating. How can I kill it?

Spelling Errors are not underlined in Notes and Mail When I misspell a word, e.g., in the Notes or Mail app, they are not underlined red. I made sure that "Check Spelling while Typing" is enabled. Does anyone have an idea how to resolve this?
