iPad won't let me add a fingerprint

My passcode works OK when I login and unlock screen on my iPad Pro (15.1). But suddenly I get the following msg every time I tap on Settings > Touch ID and Passcode > Add A Fingerprint.

Despite several times of "try again", I still get this msg. Have had my iPad for quite a while, but have never encountered this particular glitch before. Possibly an option setting?? Please advise.

A forced-restart of your iPad may be beneficial - as this will often resolve an isolated software issue:

  • On an iPad with a Home button: Press and hold the top button and the Home button at the same time. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.
  • On other iPad models: Press and quickly release the volume up button, press and quickly release the volume down button, then press and hold the top button. When the Apple logo appears, release the button.
