Cellular data usage suddenly increased and it looks like Bluetooth Services may be the culprit

Sometime since iOS 15 my phone’s data usage increased a ton. I already have the phone set to low data mode and most apps turned off to cellular as well as all of the other settings as far as I know set to not use data. My husband and I typically use less than one GB per month. A few days ago I reset the statistics under cellular data and after three days I can see that the biggest user of my data is Bluetooth services under system services. Google search has been unsuccessful in helping me figure out what the heck Bluetooth services even includes and how it is using my data. Help!!

Yes, your car is using your cellular data through the Bluetooth connection. Bluetooth itself cannot use any data of any kind, not cellular, not Wi-Fi. Your car doesn’t have an Internet connection; all of the data displayed in CarPlay comes from your phone, and thus from your cellular data network connection. This is a different situation than the one posted by LB326.

Hi, thank you. Oh absolutely, I am well aware of how to check and manage the usage. The “Bluetooth Services” seems to be eating up my data and from there I cannot find any information about what this entails or why all of a sudden I have a huge increase in cellular usage for this item. I will contact support!

Thank you for your response!

Let me tell you more details. I connect to CarPlay with a usb cable…I have Bluetooth turned off. Even if I turn off cellular data on my iPhone, Bluetooth services still uses 30 mb per day. This problem started a few months ago. I doubt that IOS 15 is the problem. Nissan connect services has been trying to get me to pay $20 per month for services I don’t want. My car downloads data from a satellite connection. It does this without my iphone being plugged in. I suspect it’s using my data plan whenever I plug in now that my free 2 years came to an end. Oh well, CarPlay was nice while it lasted. Thanks again for trying to help!

Hi there, this is EXACTLY the issue I’m having and yes I do also suspect my car is downloading data from my phone hence using the Bluetooth services. I took my car in to the dealership for a computer update (no update for radio available) and no idea if it was a coincidence or what but I went from using about 30mb a day to about 30mb per week (like happens about one time per week now). Maybe that is what my car was using in the past and I just never paid attention because I was still ok on data. We also share 1 GB per month. I started watching the numbers every time I drove. Once when I saw the Bluetooth services start to rise I hurried up and unplugged from car play and the numbers still went up about 30 mbs so it can still happen without being plugged in I guess. So still no real solution to this but I’m in a more manageable place after that update. Hoping it stays ok. Good luck to you, if you ever learn more please update here!!
