What does the Enable the On My Mac account option do?

My Notes on my Mac is already syncing with iCloud. When I change or create a Note on my iPhone, it shows on my Mac. What would this option do?

Mac Pro, macOS 12.0

It's not really an account in the usual sense. Enabling it reveals a section in the Notes sidebar called On My Mac. Any notes you create or move into that section are stored only "locally" on your computer, and not synced to iCloud. In a way, it's a leftover from before Notes used iCloud.

I wouldn't personally put notes in the On My Mac account because they wouldn't be recoverable from iCloud in the event I lost my computer or needed to erase it.
