Keyboard not working until after login
Hi All.
24" iMac M1, 16gb, 2tb SSD
Keyboard is unresponsive until after login unless it's 'wired' Trackpad is ok, so Bluetooth is working ok.
Any ideas anybody?

If you continue to get the same problem after login at a later date give this a try: boot into Safe Mode according to How to use safe mode on your Mac and test to see if the problem persists. Reboot normally and test again.
NOTE: Safe Mode boot can take up to 3 - 5 minutes as it's doing the following;
• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed
• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)
• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically
• Disables user-installed fonts
• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files
Hi HypnoTerence,
Thank you for posting in the Apple Support Communities. Being able to use your keyboard is definitely important, and we'd like to help out with this.
To verify, your keyboard only works on the login screen if it's connected directly. Is that right?
It sounds like this may be a third-party keyboard. Is that right?
As a test, it might help to try booting into safe mode to rule out possible software causes for this. If the Mac doesn't appear to start up in safe mode, that would also be helpful information. Here's How to use safe mode on your Mac. Let us know how it goes.
Best wishes.
Hi Ryane77,
No, it's the Apple keyboard that cam with the Mac in August... it started doing this about a week ago and is the same in safe mode. It only does when starting after a shut down or reset - it's fine from sleep mode. It's as if the Bluetooth doesn't connect until after login. Tried all sorts of things, including switching the keyboard on and off, but it makes no difference.
Thank you! Will try that later today!
Try tapping the Delete key a few times to wake it up.
That works! Thank you!
Terence
Thanks - had tried safe mode but it was still the same. Several taps on the 'Delete' key, as suggested by mr fish works perfectly though.

Thank you!
Oops - thank you :)
