It sounds like you're having some trouble with audio when using AirPods.
Make sure the sound levels are adjusted appropriately on the iPhone while the AirPods are connected: Adjust the volume on iPhone. Also make sure that the AirPods are clean, as lint or debris could be impacting the physical speaker or microphone: How to clean your AirPods and EarPods - Apple Support.
Also, if possible try your AirPods on another Bluetooth device. This will help isolate the issue to the device you’re currently using or your AirPods.
