How do I get the mouse arrow to display on a monitor that is attached to my Macbook?

I just attached an external monitor to my MacBook Pro, I can get the screen to mirror the MacBook screen, but I can't get the mouse to move around on the external monitor display. It is an HP 24" monitor.

Start with how to ➡️ Use one or more external displays with your Mac - Apple Support

Mirroring shows the same display in both places, while extended gets you more display space.

So to confirm, if you move the cursor to the left, and right edges of the MacBook display and from there off the display to the left and then to the right, does either cause the cursor to become visible on the monitor?
