Not sure what you mean by "traded in", but there are only 2 ways to deactivate an activation lock:


  1. Using your Apple ID and password
  2. Calling Apple with proof of purchase


But, it seems you have a second hand phone - and only the original owner can remove the lock. Unless you can get in touch with the original owner, you're SOL. I'm sure you can understand why Apple wouldn't allow just anyone to unlock a phone.
