Stolen Macbook Pro, how easy is it for thieves to break into it?

My 2020 Macbook Pro was just stolen. I initiated "Find My' and locked the device. I have gotten zero pings or notifications about the location of the Macbook. I haven't initiated the Erase feature because I'm holding out that the thieves are going to turn it on and I will be able to locate it. I'm wondering if anyone knows if a) this is foolish and b) how difficult it is for thieves to break into a locked brand new Macbook while avoiding initiating the Find My feature? There are a few files on there with SS# etc, but I can't imagine they can access those files without initiating the Find My software. Any insight is appreciated!

Thank you. I have read all of that information and done everything listed. I'm just curious how easy it is for thieves to break into a locked stolen macbook. And how likely it is that the Find My software will be activated and I might actually get my macbook back.

To start, check out the information listed in this article for what to do if your Mac is lost or stolen to protect your data: If your Mac is lost or stolen

Please note the section titled "If you can't find your Mac or didn't set up Find My" for more steps to protect your data.

We hope this helps.

Cheers!

No one is going to tell you if it is easy to outsmart the password. Ask any hacker and they'll tell you. And no one would know how likely it is that the thief will try to boot up and the Find my is activated. Those are statistics which everyday users would have no access to. And, lastly, if a hacker manages to outsmart the technology and get in, they will change the Apple ID and password and, no, they will not return it to you. They wanted a device - that is why they stole it.

I would erase it as soon as it is possible and report the theft to not only police, but my homeowner insurance carrier to see if it is covered.

Thanks. Was hoping for some anecdotal advice about how difficult it is to bypass Find My. I've already reported it and done everything suggested above. Just waiting to erase it in the off chance that someone isn't experienced and activates the Find My while fumbling through resetting it.

Also, does anyone know if there is a database with serial numbers of stolen Macbooks? The police have the serial number but I'm wondering if Apple keeps these records?
