iPad Audio output format

I am using a USB-C to HDMI adapter. This works fine going from the iPad to a TV. I have a device that take the HDMI output of the adapter and pulls out the audio to an analog format. This device does not support all audio formats. Is there any way to change the audio format that is delivered to the USB-C interface?
