iphone 13, ios 15.1.1 doing background app refresh despite disabling it causing fast battery drain

My iphone 13 pro max with ios 15.1.1 is constantly updating the apps in the background despite disabling the background app refresh. As a result, the battery is getting drained very quickly.

Anyone else facing the same issue? and what's the solution?

Tried restarting the phone, deleting and installing few high energy drain apps but the problem is still there.

Thanks

Hi akhaqan,

Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities. It sounds like you're having an issue with automatic updates for apps. We're happy to provide some information to assist.

Background app refresh and automatic app updates are different. Typically after updating the iOS app developers will release updates for apps as well. You can turn automatic app updates off by navigating to Settings > App Store > App Updates and toggling this off. The article here has the steps and a great visual as well. How to manually update apps on your Apple device

We'd also recommend following the "Tips for iOS" section in the guide here: Maximizing Battery Life and Lifespan

Cheers!

Hi akhaqan,

Thanks for clarifying. We'd still recommend you adjust the settings with the maximization steps previously provided.

Some background activity is expected based on what the app is linked to. For example, location services or Bluetooth connections. As mentioned in the section "Use Background App Refresh" from the article here: Switch apps on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

"After you switch to a different app, some apps run for a short period of time before they're set to a suspended state...With Background App Refresh, suspended apps can check for updates and new content."

If it's a large amount of background app data, you can also check and adjust your cellular settings for the app(s) with the help of the article here: Use cellular data on your iPhone or iPad and adjust any location service or Bluetooth settings as well.

Should you continue to have any issues, reach out to Apple Support directly.
