Touch ID: Cancelled by another authentication

My Touch ID stopped working after a failed attempt to reset my keychains to try to solve a different problem, related to iMessage. All of my fingerprints disappeared and now I cannot add a new one: I get the message given above.

In a previous thread on this same issue, the most helpful reply said to delete the Keychains folder under Finder->Go->Library. This did NOT work for me; the problem continues. I cannot add any new fingerprints or even select the purposes for which I would like to use Touch ID: I get the same error message.

Additional information: after deleting my Keychains folder I tried once again resetting my default keychains. This time I was able to create a new, empty login keychain with no password. The instructions said to change the password for the keychain with Edit->Change password for keychain, but this entry is grayed out, and now when I try to reset my default keychains, and enter my password, I get "Unable to obtain authorization for this operation".

Any helpful guidance would be appreciated here.

Hello, elisatems. Thank you for posting to the Apple Support Communities regarding your MacBook. We understand the situation you are noticing with the Touch ID features of your Mac and we can certainly offer guidance here.

From what we understand, you are currently unable to add a new fingerprint to your Touch ID settings. It sounds like you’ve attempted some extensive troubleshooting on your own already and we can certainly help you continue from here.

To get started on this, we have an Apple Support article that contains suggested troubleshooting steps to try first if you are noticing an issue when using Touch ID. Please complete each step in this article before attempting to add your fingerprint again:

If you continue to notice the same issue after using the steps above, we can help you more. It would be helpful to know if you encounter the same message when attempting to add your fingerprint while your Mac is started in safe mode. Using safe mode is a way to isolate out the software that could be causing this issue. The following article explains how you can enter and leave safe mode on your Mac:

We hope that these troubleshooting steps help you get back to enjoying the security features of Touch ID again. Please reply back with the safe mode results to continue.

Have a great day!
