Phone mutes other people while I speak

Whenever I'm on a phone call and speak, the other person's audio cuts out until I stop talking (and for half a second or so after I stop - there seems to be a slight delay). This makes it difficult to hold a conversation - lots of stops and starts, and asking people to repeat themselves. This is driving me insane, the phones used are iPhone 12 Pro Max and an iPhone 11.

Any help with this would be much appreciated.

mutes while i am on a call After accepting the call, after approximately after 5 minutes conversation is muted for both sides. It continues for 5 seconds. This keeps repeating. Also, If I am on speakerphone it automatically switches to phone’s receiver speaker.
