You will need a 3rd party application to extract it from the iPod: click here-> Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device - Apple Support Communities

iExplorer works well for this purpose: https://macroplant.com

The iPod classic has a setting called Disk Mode. You don't really need iExplorer to extract the music from it. That's only for iPod Touches or other iOS devices.

With Disk Mode enabled the Classic should appear as a regular USB or external hard drive in Windows explorer and you can access its folders directly and copy off the music.

See here: link-> Recover media from an iPod - Apple Community

You can also use the scripts in the above link to recreate your playlists and play stats in iTunes.

Hi Phil0124,

I purchased the license from Macroplant ($40) for iExplorer. It worked well downloading to my PC iTunes library from my 6th generation iPod but ran into problems with my old iPod Classic (rotary wheel) download.

iExplorer recognized all 3,000+ songs on my classic iPod, but hung up after downloading a few hundred songs. Not sure I will solve this problem, but am happy with the iPod 6 downloads.

Thanks for your advice!
