I liked the touch on my old keyboard (the one in the transparent housing) better than the new one that came with my iMac. I feel like I have to pound this one to get all the letters to appear.
Can anyone suggest a full-sized wireless one that has the same touch as the old ones?

I hadn't thought of that. Maybe that will be the best. From what I've read the new keyboards are supposed to respond to a lighter touch, but my fingers don't agree.
Thankfully I'm not a touch typist so as long as I can create letters on the screen I'm good.
I assumed the problem was me not being used to the touch. How do I find out if it's me or if the keyboard is defective?
You try more of the same. Like the man said, a trip to an Apple store.
That wasn't the one. Mine had the usb ports all the way back on the sides. This one has them center back.

If my local guy doesn't have it, I'll go that route.
But I'll still check with Apple to find out if my current one is considered OK.
Wait. Won't it have the older-style USB? Will it be able to plug into my 2020 iMac?
You can get small adapters from USB-A to USB-C - there are a number on Amazon.
