Cost of screen glass replacement / repair

The tilted (top-heavy!) display toppled over and the glass on my gorgeous new screen has cracked. I am heartbroken! Approximately how much will it please cost in the UK for replacement glass for a new iMac 24 inch (M1)? My insurance company needs an estimate BEFORE considering authorising a repair, but Apple will only give an official estimate once a repair is scheduled. I'm in a Catch 22 situation!

I am aware, thanks, that this is a community of end users and was hoping someone might be able to answer my question if they have had their screen glass replaced and know the cost. Apple cannot give me an estimate unless I send the computer in for repair and my insurance company will not authorise the scheduling of a repair unless they have a rough estimate at least of the cost. Since Apple cannot provide an answer by phone, I must hope someone in the community can give me an idea.

Yes I understand that was you intent but, as the 24-inch model are fairly new, it may take a while for another user int he same situation see you issue and respond.

I don't like these Catch-22 scenarios either but I know for work experience why they do it—hidden damage. Some customers fail to see the part on the estimate that says "this is and estimate and more damage may be found inside, changing the initial estimate". This is probably why they want schedule the repair so they can make sure nothing else is require repair. Example: if tiny shards of broken glass were found to have made heir way inside the case. Best prectice says they should be removed.

I would think a modern insurance carrier could work with that because that "inspect and re-estimate" process is de rigueur on automotive collision repairs.

Can you take it to an Apple Authorized Service Provider or other independent repairt shop? They may be easy to work with.

I did, and they suggested that I post the question on here since another user may well have experienced the same issue. A great many of these new iMacs have been sold over the past six months, so it is entirely possible that someone can give me an idea at least of how much it costs to replace the glass, even if a later, more official reestimate will be needed later. All I need right now before proceeding is a rough estimate / range. My insurance company absolutely refuses to authorise a repair without it. And no, an Apple Authorised Service Provider cannot give me an estimate unless I first schedule a repair, hence my question here.

I think you need to seek out another Apple Authorized Service Provider and see if you can get a rough estimate. You haven't told us which model of the M1 iMac you have, which specifications it has. If it is a base model the cost of repair may be close to the replacement cost of the computer.

Also, you may want to pay for a repair out of pocket as your insurance rates may go up if the insurance company has to pay for the repair. Remember insurance companies are there to make money, not to pay out.The question you need to ask your insurance company is "If I get this repaired and paid for by my insurance" what will the cost of my premiums be after 3, 6, 12 months?"

iMac21,1

24-inch Silver iMac with 4.5K Retina display

Chip: Apple M1

Total Number of Cores: 8 (4 performance and 4 efficiency)

Memory: 16 GB

Gigabit Ethernet

Two Thunderbolt / USB 4 ports

Two USB 3 ports

2TB SSD storage

Any estimation of the range of cost of a new screen would be much appreciated. I don't think the damage goes deeper than the glass.

Thanks everyone!

Apple Support has informed me that if a repair is scheduled, it must take place. There is no way of getting through on the phone to an actual person at Apple Repair, just a robot who attempts to schedule a repair... and my home insurance will not authorise me to schedule one without a rough quotation first. I can't go into an Apple Store for Covid shielding reasons (terminal cancer case in the family) and a 'send-in' cannot be approved for a broken screen. I just want to know what sort of price range we are talking about if only the glass turns out to be broken. I spent the whole day today trying to get through on the phone to nearby retailers since Apple Support cannot provide an estimate. Hopefully, someone on here will have an idea.

That’s not correct. You have misunderstood them or spoken to a 3rd party organization.

There is no need to speak to a person to schedule in-store Apple repair, which is free and without obligation. Just follow the prompts and show up at the store at appointed time. You can also download the Apple Support App which is equivalent to the web version but is more user friendly.

Estimates here or elsewhere on the internet won’t be sufficient for insurance claim purposes. Unauthorized repairs by retailers could void the warranty. Just follow the prompts at https://getsupport.apple.com/ or the Apple Support App, and you’ll be in good shape.

Good luck!
