Time Machine and email

I tried to restore an email from TM and it didn't work. Apparently this functionality has been removed. I know it used to be possible because I've done it.

The problem was discussed here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/251399770

But Apple says, https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201250

"Back up your Mac with Time Machine

Learn how to create a backup of the files on your Mac.

Use Time Machine, the built-in backup feature of your Mac, to automatically back up your personal data, including apps, music, photos, email, and documents. Having a backup allows you to recover files that you later delete or can't access."

So what is the story? And is there any way to get a deleted email back?

I appreciate that you are trying to help, but we seem to be talking past each other.

I'm not trying to restore my mac or do anything complicated.

Some time ago I deleted an email I should have kept. I would like to find that message on my TM backup and restore it. This is something I've done before, without any synching or worrying about internet connections or any of that.

What I did, in the past, was open Mail and then enter TM. So I got the Mail window in TM. Now I could pick an earlier date from the right side of the screen and select the date I wanted (guessed) and the Mail window would appear as of that date. Then I could select a message and hit restore, and it put that message in a mailbox called "Restored Messages." That's all I'd like to do now.

The bottom line is that Apple removed Apple Mail backups to Time Machine, starting in macOS Catalina. My understanding is that they believe that any previous emails would be stored on the email provider's servers.

My suggestion, going forward, is to NOT rely on Time Machine for this purpose. Instead, a couple of options would be:

  1. Use another third-party solution for backups, like Carbon Copy Cloner.
  2. Use an email archiving app, like MailSteward, to maintain an archive of all of your email messages.

How I do so...

Avoid Syncing:

Backup works just fine for me. Thing is, you need to just avoid synchronizing with your eMail provider once restored. You'd power off your router while restoring and then export it all as an archive. Once exported, close Mail. Then, enable WiFi. then open Mail. Once opened, import the archive. Find out about this here: Backing up and restoring Mail archives - Macworld

Asking your eMail Provider:

Contact your eMail provider, asking them how to avoid this synchronization, when you go about re-syncing it.

Thanks, but I can't get to the "once restored" stage.

When I open Mail, and then enter Time Machine, I don't see any of my messages. I do see the mailboxes, with a message that says "Click Restore to recover the Inbox mailbox for each of your accounts. Or select another mailbox or specific messages to restore."

Meanwhile, the "Restore" button is grayed out, and while I can select mailboxes no individual messages appear.

Perhaps I Misread?:

Seeing it as though you were trying to restore your Mac from a time Machine Backup, and are losing the eMails upon the restoration. So, basically, if you are not looking to do that, then try doing so. You'd restore once more, this time performing the "avoid the syncing" method I described.

IOW: If you are not restoring your Mac from a Time Machine Backup, then it would not apply.
