Appear to have data loss in the data migration from my 2017 iMac (a) to the new 2021 iMac (b).

Is it common for files to be distributed differently? e.g. Documents from a. are not found in the folder of b. Documents. Search has indicated the file structures are not consistent. More troubling is the migration of music. Initial migration only migrated music purchased from the Apple store. All playlist are gone. Efforts to manually transfer are difficult due to the difference in USB ports supported by the two iMacs making manual transfer tedious.

What have I done wrong? What need I do to correct this.

BYW. I tried another Migration effort to target music, however, the old Mac produced a code to sync while the new Mac just 'spun'

Thank you for the quick response. I followed the instructions provided by Apple for Migration Assistant. Specifically:

  • checked that both Macs were at current software release
  • placed Macs side by side
  • Opened Migration Assistant (MA) on my old Mac (a)
  • Directed MA to transfer my data to another Mac
  • On my New MAC (b) - selected Mac (a) then clicked continue
  • Insured that both a and b were on the same wi-fi network
  • Selected information to transfer - Applications, other files and folders, System and Network
  • Clicked continue
  • The process began and took several hours
  • On completion of the process I reviewed files and found gaps - especially in music... Applications transferred properly based on a high level review
  • Browsed files and folders which was made more difficult as locations were not exactly as represented on b as they were on a
  • Tried to trouble shoot using Apple online recommendations.
  • Following day my reading lead me to attempt specific file migration method. After following above process Old Mac (a) provided a code for b to ensure transfer could be done. Mac b 'clocked' for several hours, never showing any code or response.
  • Attempted to manually transfer some files and music in a library via thumb drive to b... That got old really fast...

Hope this helps in diagnosis... rkfauman87.

Again, thanks for your time and attention.
