Mac saves 2 copies of sent mail

I'm using Apple Mail app to manage Hotmail (outlook) email account. When I send emails through Mail App on Mac, I see 2 copies of sent email in Sent folders on both the Mail App and the Outlook website. Recipient receives only 1, however. If I send email using my iPhone (configured same way to manage Outlook email), only 1 email appears in Sent folders.

How do I stop Apple Mail app from creating 2 entries of sent emails for every 1 email?

thank you.

Even with CC box checked, I still get 2 copies in my Sent box of each email sent from my Mac. Provider is Microsoft (hotmail, now outlook).

So if I had to guess— your mail is automatically sending the CC anyway— even in the unchecked state.

did you log in " Hotmail (outlook) email account" via a browser —an verify there are no user preferences there to change, that are sending copies of sent...

For problem accounts the go to way to sort things out is to delete the account, then add it back.

Note—

  • IMAP accounts stay on the server, so no local loss, when you re-sync
  • POP accounts download and remove from the server—therefor save your inbox/sent box if you want them
  • "On My Mac" is just that, local folders you created and moved mail into. So no loss

thanks but I already have the "automatically cc myself" box unchecked. Any other suggestions?

Yes , change it to CC and see if you now get 3 copies in your sent box—this may be telling as you try and isolate the problem.

You do not say who is your email provider— it may be logging in through a browser and checking preferences there...(?)

Uninstall all third party apps that are Cleaners/Optimizers/Anti-Virus/VPN—

all known to cause issues on the macOS

To trouble shoot further you can:

 —Try a SafeBoot https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201262

Takes noticeable longer to get to the login screen, does a 5 minute disk repair before it fully boots up, and certain system caches get cleared and rebuilt, including dynamic loader cache,  etc.

Login and test. Reboot  as normal and test.  Caches get rebuilt automatically.

In Safe mode third party system modifications and system accelerations are disabled, it removes malware, etc hampering smooth operation, however a  reboot will put it back to normal mode.

This test will tell you if third party interference; extensions etc are not loaded in safe boot mode.
