Greetings, rcherd.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities! We understand that you were viewing the Apple Support article, Switch between apps on iPad, and you’re curious about whether it is possible to switch to another app using only the Apple Pencil.

We'd be delighted to answer.

You may have noticed about halfway down the page there is a note that says:

Drawing near the edge of the screen with your Apple Pencil won't activate Control Center, Notification Center, or Multitasking. You can draw anywhere on the screen without getting interrupted.

This means you won't be able to use your Apple Pencil to pull up the Dock and access the App Switcher. The design keeps you from accidentally opening one of these features on your iPad when you're using your Apple Pencil, but we find that it's fairly simple to use one of the fingers or knuckles on the hand holding the pencil to quickly swipe the screen when we want to switch apps.

Hopefully, this helps answer your questions.
