The redact tool in preview is great, with one MAJOR exception.
When I select an area on the PDF to redact, not only does it redact the selection, it also puts a "redact box" in a mirrored location farther down on that page, effectively obliterating information I need to show.
I've used this tool in previous OS versions, but it looks like something is wrong in Monterrey.
Can anyone confirm or help with this one?

Now I think I see the problem.
The PDFs I'm trying to mark up are scanned documents (from Image Capture). Those are the ones with the "mirrored" redaction.
On a regular PDF, the redaction works as advertised.

I am using macOS 12.0.1 on a new 16-inch MacBook Pro M1 Pro. When I chose to redact and selected a portion of the text. I could not reproduce what you describe as a mirror of it. The only redaction on that PDF page was where I selected it. Behaves exactly as it did for me in macOS 11.6.1.
I just tried redacting a PDF w/Preview and all I got was a black rectangle around the redacted t4xt with Xs through the redactions. Nothing else added
Interesting, this is what I'd experienced with previous macOS versions. Are you using Monterrey?
