When I open an item on my iPad it open in a strip on the side. How can I get the item to enlarge to full screen

When I open an item on my iPad, it opens on the side as a strip. How can I get the item to enlarge to a few screen?

How can we drag apps to the top of the screen? I appreciate the blacked-out space in full screen mode, but using an app like Messages (or anything in a vertical list) but not being able to place it at the top of the screen in the gap next to the notch is problematic. Why don't apps fill the screen on my ipad mini 6? Most of the apps I've downloaded from the App store onto my ipad mini 6 don't fill the screen - they use about half of the screen size. I may as well be using a phone! Is this yet another Apple design fault or is there a solution? Thanks.

A simple tap of a link should open the item. A long-touch will instead open a preview window.
