When I open an item on my iPad it open in a strip on the side. How can I get the item to enlarge to full screen

When I open an item on my iPad, it opens on the side as a strip. How can I get the item to enlarge to a few screen?

A simple tap of a link should open the item. A long-touch will instead open a preview window.
