When I try to change the volume on my Mac, it won't let me change it and gives me a prohibitory symbol. (I have inserted a screenshot here) I have not updated to MacOS Monterey yet, and I am still on Big Sur, could that be the problem?
I have found the solution, just switch the output to your macbook's speakers.

I just disconnected my external monitor and it worked, but do you know if I could continue using my sound when connected to an external monitor? It seemed to be working fine before.
I cannot control the audio to the speakers on my LG 32-inch display connected by HDMI. I get the same inoperative controls as you, and that is why I asked. The audio controls work for external Bluetooth speakers though.

that seems to be normal behaviour. when i have my sound being sent to my samsung TV via HDMI i get that same thing.
all i need is to set it back to internal speakers to get control of the volume again.
Are you connecting to an external monitor via USB-C or HDMI, or is what you get when you have set Sound Preferences output to the internal speaker?
