I'm unable to purchase Apple Care for AirPods

I purchased air pods from a third party (shopper drug mart) during the bonus redemption event on Saturday November 27. I entered the serial number to purchase apple care and I am unable to purchase apple care. Why is that?

Why the Error?:

Either they are not authentic, or the were not registered up purchased (something performed when purchased from a retailer).
