Should your vintage-antique HP 8600-series all-in-one printer have no current
driver update/upgrade path; you may try to see if it could be used another way.
[Some may require setup by wire (USB + Adapter) for an initial attempt to use.]
Most popular printers are 'AirPrint-enabled' so you can print wirelessly to them
using your Mac. ~ You don’t have to download and install printer drivers.
Rosetta2 may not offer a means to use this old HP 8600. See if AirPrint has
a sub-model listed; then see if HP may have a marginal model to use.
Marginal model numbers among this series could be useful (or not) with AirPrint.
For that, you would have to be willing to Try. I almost bought an HP 8600 series
AIO; had other issues with HP. Sought/bought instead, photo-quality Epson AIO.
(The Epson series offered various means including native Wi-Fi support. A now
older model; proven best choice. Prints 'with/out' drivers, wire/less; iPhone, etc.
"AirPrint is built into most popular printer models; for a list of printers that support
AirPrint, see the Apple Support article About AirPrint."

Usually those models on a fringe may be seen as useful with AirPrint. However
looking through list of 'supported' printers; shows some HP '86xx' ~ without an
exact match. [Another option: may be to try and see if that series printer could
be used by USB, through a wireless base station.] If not directly set up to AirPrint.
"Learn how to print from your Mac or print from your iOS device,
and learn what to do if you can't print." - or, See Share your printer.
I'd used some non-WiFi printers through USB ports, in base stations; they worked.
An early 'Apple AirPort Extreme 54' (orb-like spacecraft) was my fav. Still have one.
While have not used it in some time, it has class; with wifi and built-in 54k modem.
While the idea to use an older trusted peripheral/printer; drivers may or not still
be useful. ~ With the transition from 32-bit to 64-bit 'finality' occurred, third party
items had plenty of time to adapt. AirPrint is or was a bridge-technology.
Plan on acquiring a new printer/scanner/AIO. If you have older gear HP 8600
still supports; could still OK for those. Ink is usually problematic as these age.
..Given vintage/obsolete status, HP 8600-series has time stacked against them..
Good luck & happy trails! ☺︎

Hi,
The support page for an HP Officejet Pro 8600 e-All-in-One Printer - N911a has a reference to HP Easy Start for macOS 12. No specific information about chips.
For earlier operating system versions, problems have been reported with HP Easy Start in some cases. HP Easy Admin has been a workaround. HP Easy Admin allows downloads without a connected printer. If necessary, this tool could perhaps be worth testing.

If nothing else works, an HP Officejet Pro 8600 (version 4.1.1) driver is mentioned in the article Printer and scanner drivers for Mac - Apple Support. The package (Post Date: Dec 11, 2020) HP Printer Drivers v5.1 for macOS can be found at https://support.apple.com/kb/dl1888?locale=en_US . It may or may not work with your printer, computer, and operating system.
Make sure that you have backup copies of important files (documents, photos, et cetera) before any tests.
Unfortunately, no HP 8600 printer seems to be listed in (the September 30, 2021 edition of) About AirPrint - Apple Support. Three HP Officejet Pro 8600A models were shown in an older (February 13, 2012) HT4356 iOS: AirPrint 101 Apple article, though.

Presumably you've visited HP's printer driver website and tried to download the one which is available there...? If that doesn't work, then I don't understand why you're posting here and not asking HP?
Ya ok, all good questions & I’ll answer you even though you’ve not chiming in to answer my issue. Yet…
Yes, went to HP’s site & searched for drivers / software for the MB Pro using the M1Pro Chip with the mentioned 8600 series printer. No find!
So, looked for support contact of any kind & only found a virtual assistant. Trying to communicate with that diligently trying yielded nothing.
My next step was to see if any Mac enthusiasts have resolved the same issue. This is the reason for my inquiry here.
I will say there’s a 3rd party “Rosetta” or something similar that bridges M1chip with Intel to resolve the issue. This is a patch that I will try/use if HP doesn’t have the correct driver “yet.” Mind you, the proper designed driver would be the way to go & much faster.
Maybe I didn’t make myself clear enough that seeking support from HP was a dead end.
So I kindly ask; what say you?

Again, thank you, I’ll be busy looking through these links. Also going to find documentation/manual for my particular model to see if air… isn’t mentioned.
It seems to me this unit works via Wi-Fi because I’m able to print from iPad & iPhone. With that said, perhaps there’s a way to send prints from the Mac via Wi-Fi? Suppose a gross work around would be to email the print to self & print from iPad. Of course that wouldn’t be cool/efficient while having a new state-of-the-art Mac.

Thank you! Lots of good info to digest. I’ll do some homework & reply with results…
