Macbook Pro 14 M1 Max doesnt save external display settings - External display issues/problems

I have 3 external monitors hooked up to my Macbook Pro 14 M1 Max. For two of these monitors (MSI MAG322CQRV) the display settings dont get saved when i put the Mac to sleep and wake it up again or when i reboot. The layout is all messed up and also the HZ setting is not as it supposed to be. I tried all sorts of different cables and docks. Its the same issue every time. The Macbook fails to send a correct video signal to the monitors when waking it up or restarting.

How is that a thing in 2021? Unacceptable having to face issues like that after spending 4 grand on a computer

As per Apple's specs...

The MBP 14 inch M1 Max supports:

"Up to three external displays with up to 6K resolution at 60Hz and one external display with up to 4K resolution at 60Hz."

That said, your 2 MSI Optix monitors run at 144hz. So, You should be running both via "USB-C to DisplayPort cable." from the Mac. If you are using a hub the refresh rate is cut to 120hz or less.

I know the MBP can run one external 4K monitor at 144Hz. However, I am not sure about 2 at 144Hz... So, that might be where you are running into problems when the Mac wants to reset the refresh rate to 60Hz.

Have you tried lowering the refresh rate to 120Hz for both of them? You really don't need 144Hz, unless you are playing games non-stop...

Hi thanks for the response. Im aware that the Macbook does only support up to 60Hz refresh rate. I have both monitors set to 60Hz both in the monitor settings aswell as in the Macbooks display settings.

These settings dont get saved unfortunately whenever i wake the monitor up or restart it, the refresh rate resets to 144hz and the orientation and layout of the monitors gets randomly messed up.

I dont do any gaming. This system is used for work. I never had any issues with that when plugging in my 13 inch Macbook Pro with an Intel chipset.

The more i look into this the more i feel this is a known issue that affects thousands of users. Here is a video from Jerry Schulze he talks about similar issues in his video. (its 7 months old)

The comment section below the video is full of people having the same problem. There are discussion on reddit and other forums where hundreds of people are facing the same issues since the M1 Macs came out. I dont know if Apple doesnt care as this has been known for a year now and hasnt been fixed until now.

The only thing that helps me is unplugging and replugging all my cables one - sometimes multiple times.

Apple. FIX ASAP

Im not that sure unfortunately if the problem persisted for a year now. I already called Apple and opened to claims via the Feedback feature.

I can only assume but it seems as if only higher refresh rate monitors are affected. Just like in Jerrys video where hes using a "lower quality" monitor its working fine, my third monitor also has "only" 60Hz and that one seems to work without any issues.

So looks like the system as trouble detecting higher refresh rate monitors upon wake up / system start even though the monitors refresh rate is set to 60Hz in the display settings.

Hope to see this fixed soon
