Finder sidebar favourites disappearing with Google Drive

Since having to switch from Google's Backup and Sync (fine) to Google Drive (awful) I can't search in Finder as it won't search a networked drive, and now my sidebar favourites have all disappeared. On boot, sometimes the Google Drive icon appears on the desktop, other times it doesn't – even when the drive is synced and up to date via the menu bar icon, which does appear. This goes for my MBP (old 15" but upgraded with an SSD and maxed with RAM) and my 2017 27" iMac. I suspect Google will blame Apple and vice versa, seeing as they get on so well. Anyone else with the same issues, ideas, solutions?
