Family Sharing and multiple Apple Music Profiles

I just switched from all phones on one account (apple user Id) to family sharing, where each phone has a unique apple user ID. But for some reason the Apple Music profile that was created before we started family sharing is showing up on all phones and I'm not able to create new/multiple Music profiles.

Hi,

If you see the same user profile for Apple Music across all Apple IDs within that Family, it means you are signed into the same Apple ID in iCloud Settings AND Media & Purchases.

It is very important that every member of FS uses their own Apple ID. There is no reason or point for everyone in the family to share the same Apple ID when FS offers a feature called Purchase Sharing. Sharing the same Apple ID across multiple accounts and family members only causes complex issues for every member involved.

Apple Music User Profiles are unique to the Apple ID using Apple Music.

This means each Apple Music user will have a different Apple Music ‘user profile’ , no two should be the same, unless signed into the same Apple ID on those devices.

My suggestion to you would be to start over with the Family Sharing Setup to ensure you do not have this issue or other issues in the future.

  1. Have the organizer of the FS Stop Family Sharing.

Settings > Name > Family Sharing > click on Organizer/Me > Stop Family Sharing.

Once the FS has been disbanded, confirm that everyone who wants to participate in the new FS is signed into their correct Apple ID within their Settings. We are also going to disable Apple Music features while we do this.

Apple Music features:

Have each member go to Settings > Music. Disable Automatic downloads & Sync Library.

Every member should be confirming the following is correct:

  • Settings > Name.

You will see the account holders name and Apple ID email displayed here. Make sure each Apple ID is different, and their correct Apple ID.

  • Settings > Name > Media & Purchases > View Account.

You will be asked to confirm your password or Face ID/Touch ID to view your account information. Once confirmed, at the top it will list the Apple ID email signed into Media & Purchases. Do not click on it. It will just redirect you to the Apple ID website.

Instead, confirm that the Apple ID listed is the same Apple ID seen when you just checked Settings > Name. If it is not the same, go back by clicking ‘Done’ in the upper right hand corner. You will then be redirected back to where you were, Settings > Name.

We are now going to click on Media & Purchases > Sign Out. Once it signs out, tap Media & Purchases again, and it will prompt you to sign in with the Apple ID that is listed as signed into iCloud (the Apple ID found in Settings > Name) If it does not list that account, select Use Different Apple ID or Not Me. You will then be prompted to enter the correct Apple ID.

Once everyone now has the correct Apple ID signed into both platforms, iCloud & Media and Purchases, we will now set up FS again and enable Apple Music across the devices.

  • To set up FS again, whoever is going to be the Organizer has to be the one subscribed to Apple Music Family. This is due to the Organizer sharing the subscription with all other members. No other members should have their own Apple Music membership unless it is a student membership. If they do, it needs to be cancelled. If the Organizer pays for Apple Music Family, have them go to Settings > Name > Set Up Family Sharing.
  • Select invite via iMessage, and proceed to invite everyone to the FS again that wants to use Apple Music.
  • On each device that received the invitation, confirm that you want to join FS.
  • Once everyone has joined the FS again, make sure on the Organizers Settings only > Settings > Name > Family Sharing > Apple Music at the bottom > Share Apple Music is enabled. You should also see a list of all the members of the family that are using the shared Membership.
  • Once the organizer has confirmed Apple Music is being shared with everyone, have EACH member of the family go to Settings > Music > enable Automatic Downloads & enable Sync Library.
  • After doing so, go to the Music app. Confirm that you have access to Apple Music by searching for a song and downloading it. You should then also be able to edit/create your Music Profile as normal. Whoever had the Music Profile originally that everyone was seeing on their devices, their profile will still be the same.

This should resolve your issues.

I’d also like to explain that the reason the Apple IDs have to be the same signed into iCloud Settings & Media and Purchases is due to Apple Music being split across both of those platforms.

iCloud controls the FS accounts, set up, and offers the ability to share content and subscriptions with other Family Members, including iCloud+ Storage.

Media & Purchases controls the ability to access, view, and share the content found tied to those members of the FS. Purchased content, shared subscriptions & Apple Music, Apps, etc.

Hope this helps!
