Hi and thank you!
Dot was on without phone being in use. It has since disappeared however comes and goes. Is there a way to check which App may be using it?
Battery is 89% and drains sporadically not necessarily when phone is in use.
When the dot is on or right after it goes out open the Control Center and the name of the app that was using the microphone will appear at the top of the page. Note that when Siri is active it also uses the microphone.
There is never a time when the phone is not in use. Even if you aren’t actively using it there are processes running on it, including just periodically staying connected to the cellular network. Go to Settings/Battery and you can see which apps are using the most energy.
89% is still in the acceptable range, but it means that your battery will have slightly (~10%) less capacity than when it was new. If there is no message in the Battery Health screen saying battery is degraded you can continue using it, just charging it slightly more often. If it reaches 80% the battery should be replaced.
The absolute best way to slow the decline of battery capacity long term is to enable Optimized Battery Charging (Settings/Battery/Battery Health) and charge the device overnight, every night. The battery will fast charge to 80%, then pause. During the nighttime pause the phone will use mains power instead of battery power, allowing the battery to “rest”, and thus reducing the need to charge the battery quite as often. The phone will resume charging to reach 100% when you are ready to use your phone; it will “learn” your usage pattern. If you enable iCloud Backup (Settings/[your name]/iCloud - iCloud Backup) the phone will back up overnight also, assuring that you can never lose more than the current day’s updates.
