External webcam not working in Monterey

According to this thread, the Monterey 12.3 update fixes this, I just installed it and can confirm it works for my Logitech C615.

I've also found that the Monterey 12.3 update has fixed the issue.

Is it connected to a USB-C hub?

Try restarting the computer when the camera is attached and the mac is closed (clamshell mode).

That helped me a bit but hopefully, there'll be an update for Monterey. Such a pain.

What worked to get my MBPro 16-inch 2021 with OS 12.2 to see my external Logitech 920 webcam was running this simple command in the terminal. Good luck to you all, may your green screens provide you clarity.

Here's my update. I had my Logitech C615 connected through a Tripp-Lite hub. I also had an external monitor plugged in through the hub using the HDMI connection. The monitor worked fine all the time, but the webcam would get forgotten until I rebooted. So I bought a cheap USB-C to USB adapter on Amazon and am now using that as a direct connection for the webcam. The webcam is now recognized consistently when I use Zoom, but not when I open FaceTime. I don't use FaceTime on my laptop so I haven't looked into changing any settings, but I am so happy that it now works with Zoom.

None of this makes any sense to me and I hope Apple fixes it.

I found that if I open Facetime my camera starts to work in Zoom and Teams???

12.2.1 was just release today. Try updating to that.

I have a logitech C270 HD webcam (720p @ 30 fps) which works well on Monterey. I've used it with Zoom, Skype, and FaceTime (and, I think, Meet via the Chrome browser).

Also, the Canon EOS webcam utility works on Monterey (I use it with a Canon EOS RP). The Canon camera utility works with Zoom, Meet, and Skype but I seem to recall someone saying that it doesn't work with FaceTime (I know that it does't work as an input to QuickTime video recording).

Try booting to Safe Mode. That boot up takes minutes and clears caches and other things that may resolve your problem.

Does the problem persist in Safe Mode?

A lot of times just boot to Safe Mode followed by normal boot resolves problems.

I have the same problem too. Logitech web cam worked fine for years on all other OSX versions. Stopped working on Monterey.

The camera looses connection after the Mac has been to sleep. Only way to get it back is to restart in clamshell mode with camera attached.

Tried other ways to restore camera, including restart with clamshell open. Restart with detached cam and re-attaching. Restarting VCDAssistant. None of these work.

From Monterey 12.2 and a non-working C615, I updated to Monterey 12.3 and just held a Zoom meeting with no issues.

I unplugged the camera, put the MBP to sleep, woke it up, plugged the camera back in, and confirmed the camera still is an available camera.

I am keeping my fingers crossed it remains working.

For me it's fixed as of MacOs Monterey version 12.2! I finally can go back to using my mac for video calls instead of getting my eyes burned out by my old pc!

Is the hub a self powered hub? What brand and model is it? OWC (MacSales.com) have several hubs which are known to work with M1 Macs. You might contact their Customer Support and see what model they have will work with your particular hardware, needs and budget.
