External webcam not working in Monterey

Safe mode didn't change anything.

What happens is that when I reboot, either in regular or safe mode, the webcam works. After a while, usually after sleep mode, the webcam stops working. Both Zoom and FaceTime recognize that the camera is there, but the camera does not turn on and the video is black.

The webcam is attached to the laptop via the same dongle as the external monitor, which continues to work fine all the time.

Is the "same dongle" really a hub?

My Logitech C615 WEBCAM with Mac 12.2 is not working at all in any of these applications ever since my update. Does anyone know if this is a fix needed from Apple or from Logitech? Do I need to order a new webcam or will this be fixed soon? Thanks!

Is it connected to a USB-C hub?

Try restarting the computer when the camera is attached and the mac is closed (clamshell mode).

That helped me a bit but hopefully, there'll be an update for Monterey. Such a pain.

Try booting to Safe Mode. That boot up takes minutes and clears caches and other things that may resolve your problem.

Does the problem persist in Safe Mode?

A lot of times just boot to Safe Mode followed by normal boot resolves problems.

Is the hub a self powered hub? What brand and model is it? OWC (MacSales.com) have several hubs which are known to work with M1 Macs. You might contact their Customer Support and see what model they have will work with your particular hardware, needs and budget.

There was another discussion of problem with the C920 Pro. All you can do and wait and see if a subsequent update to Monterey resolves the problem.

I have an older C110 and it work fine but that camera is only 720p

I have a logitech C270 HD webcam (720p @ 30 fps) which works well on Monterey. I've used it with Zoom, Skype, and FaceTime (and, I think, Meet via the Chrome browser).

Also, the Canon EOS webcam utility works on Monterey (I use it with a Canon EOS RP). The Canon camera utility works with Zoom, Meet, and Skype but I seem to recall someone saying that it doesn't work with FaceTime (I know that it does't work as an input to QuickTime video recording).

I have a Lenovo Webcam connect to a Dell Dock (Shows as Dell USB 3.1 in System Report).

Getting a strange behaviour in that when used with Teams, white balance is off and overall there's about a second delay with the camera from moving, to seeing the change on-screen, but if I open the FaceTime app, the camera is perfect; no lag whatsoever.

Tried restarting, but makes no difference...

I restarted with the adapter and USB external camera plugged in.

I opened Zoom and my face was still there.

Then! I looked up and chose dropdown menu Meeting, chose Switch Camera OR: shift command N

Voila! it works and I don't have to plug and unplug during a lesson.

I don't know if Switch Camera works without plugging it in and restarting, so I'm keeping this in and on all night.

Our school board Zoom is through Teams I think?

I have just been moving the camera by hand from the top of my MacBook to the camera/light stand for my desk/table top presentations...makes conversation and giggles with the class.

My Logitech C615 not working with Monterey 12.2. It only works right after the restart. It is connected via LG monitor over USB-C. I have Dell with windows installed, everything works fine with the exact same setup.

Apple please fix this!!!

What worked to get my MBPro 16-inch 2021 with OS 12.2 to see my external Logitech 920 webcam was running this simple command in the terminal. Good luck to you all, may your green screens provide you clarity.

sudo killall VDCAssistant

Just installed latest Monterey (12.2) on MacBook Air M1. My Logitech C615 is still NOT not working. I get black screen with FaceTime and with Zoom until I restart. Then it works until MacBook goes to sleep and I have to reboot AGAIN. Also tried sudo killall VDCAssistant, as drbhayes suggested. No success. Any other ideas?
